PROCESSING MATERIALS WITH STAR BURST™

Precision Equipment for Cosmetic Formulations

Explore the use of Star Burst for stable cosmetic emulsions, nanoemulsions, formulations, skin care, sunscreen, health and beauty.

The challenges of processing stable cosmetic ingredients

Creating premium cosmetic products starts with using high-quality ingredients. Modern formulations demand precision, efficiency, and effectiveness. By achieving stable cosmetic emulsions and nanoemulsions, optimizing particle size, and maximizing absorption, you can significantly enhance the performance and shelf life of skincare products, lotions, and perfumes.

With Star Burst, you can process ingredients to ensure uniform particle size, create nanoemulsions, and improve texture, consistency, and stability — all while reducing waste and cycle times.

And in an era where clean ingredients are in demand, Star Burst processes materials with minimal contamination. Allowing you to elevate your product quality and stay ahead in the competitive market.

How does Star Burst compare to competitive alternatives?

Star Burst vs. Other Methods

Key Points

Star Burst

Competitive Equipment

Engineered to process both hard and
soft materials efficiently

Compact size and design, with high process throughput.

Can perform two processes at once, emulsification and homogenization

Extended part life reduces stoppages and the cost of part replacement

Small replacement parts are readily available, keeping you up and running

Hard materials don't result in frequent nozzle clogs, because Sugino processing chambers are designed to handle them.

Maintenance is designed to be stress- and frustration-free for a smooth process.

What is the Star Burst wet jet milling process and why is it better than ball milling?

The Star Burst™ wet jet milling device disperses, emulsifies, pulverizes, and reforms surfaces of raw materials using Sugino's innovative high-pressure (max. 245 MPa) spray technology. This process utilizes collision, cavitation, and high shear to produce ultra-fine particles with minimal contamination.

In comparison to ball milling, high-pressure water processing ensures that nearly all high-value ingredients are utilized, eliminating waste and leaving no residual grinding materials behind.

Results are easily repeatable. And the entire lineup of Star Burst products allows for effortless scale-up from R&D to full production levels without compromising the quality or performance of the cosmetic products.

Additionally, Star Burst™ dramatically reduces cycle times, completing processes in minutes or hours instead of days or weeks.

BETTER PRODUCTS START WITH BETTER INGREDIENTS

What cosmetic materials can be processed with Star Burst?
Squalane

Squalane helps increase hydration and is used in skincare, cosmetics, and hair care products as a moisturizer. When squalane is reduced to desired particle size, absorption is increased. Star Burst homogeneously emulsifies squalane to enhance skin penetration.

Silica

Fumed Silica is a nano-scale, powdered material with a large surface area. It is a common additive in cosmetics used for thickening, improving color, reducing shine, and absorbing oil and moisture. Fumed silica thickens oils, waxes, and emulsions, improving the structure and stability of products like creams, lotions, and lipsticks.

SILICONE OIL

Silicone Oil has multiple benefits for skincare. For instance, it promotes healing, reduces scarring, and locks in moisture. And when combined with other cosmetic products, it makes them easier to blend and spread. Star Burst emulsifies oil in water (and water in oil) uniformly and to the submicron level, delivering a highly stable product with improved skin penetration and absorption.

Liposomes

Liposomes act as a delivery vehicle for many active ingredients. Their biocompatibility and low toxicity make them ideal candidates to be used in cosmetics and skincare. Liposome nanoparticles aid in skin absorption and improve the stability of the active ingredients.

METAL OXIDES

Metal oxide nanoparticles can be used to add pigments to skincare and cosmetics, but they also offer protection against visible light and blue light. Titanium dioxide is a mineral filter/physical filter used in sunscreen to reflect, rather than absorb UV rays. When processed to nano-level particle size, titanium dioxide provides lightweight and clear UVB and short-wave UVA protection. Star Burst efficiently mineralizes titanium dioxide, decreasing processing time, and increasing production and output, with minimal contamination. Zinc oxide nanoparticles can deliver similar results. And silver and gold nanoparticles have been shown to increase the antimicrobial and healing properties of some cosmetic formulations.

Star Burst improves dispersion stability in sunscreen ingredients

Properly dispersed sunscreen is smooth, non-sticky, and provides superior UV protection.

Processing sunscreen ingredients with Star Burst improves the texture and performance of the final product.

Star Burst reduces particle size and improves dispersion stability in zinc oxide and titanium dioxide better than conventional homogenizers.
